Fire crews were busy cleaning up a minor gasoline spill yesterday (August 10) morning in Bayside.

Around 9:00am, the fire department responded to reports that gasoline had leaked from a vehicle.

"We're looking at approximately 70 to 100 litres - its unknown at this time - of gasoline, that was in a vehicle and made its way onto the ground, into the storm sewer system and into our natural water ways," said Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel.

Rabel said the cause of the spill is still under investigation.

Crews worked first to contain and then to clean up the spill, with worries that it would leak into a nearby water feature. The feature has been examined by a biologist and a water boom has been deployed to help contain the gasoline that might've made its way into the water.

Rabel said the public need not worry as the spill won't directly affect any residents.

“There is no danger to the public or the drinking water as the fuel leaked into the storm water system which is separate from the drinking water supply.”
