Crews from Airdrie's Parks and Fire Departments were out this morning to clean up the area south of the pedestrian overpass along the QEII where a semi truck slammed through a sound barrier.

"The immediate area is still a debris field, it's gonna be fenced off temporarily," said Deputy Fire Chief Garth Rabel, "And then the Airdrie Fire Department is working with a HAZMAT team right now, just evaluating the soil where diesel fuel leeched into, and we'll be coming up with a reclamation strategy."

Due to the extensive damage to the sound barrier from the collision, Rabel says it will take some time before repairs can happen.

"That is going to take time for Engineering and such to take a look at that and see what has to happen to make those repairs, but we're responsible right now, we're just going to cordon off the area."

In the mean time, Rabel hopes Airdrie residents will use common sense around the site.

"Be aware. The area is going to be fenced off. Don't breach that security fence, it's there for safety reasons. Just pass by and keep on going if you can, there's no need to try to do anything else around that site."
