Some recent coyote sightings in Airdrie mean you should know how to respond if you see one of the animals in the city limits.

Yesterday (July 21), a coyote was spotted in Bayside. There were also reports that a coyote attacked a dog earlier in June.

The City of Airdrie does not deal with wild animal control, but does have lots of helpful information on their website on dealing with coyotes. If you see a coyote in Airdrie, you should call the Fish & Wildlife Coyote Information Line at 403-297-7789. If you are in an emergency situation or immediate danger, you can always call 911.

The best thing to do if you see a coyote in your area is make sure the animal knows your neighbourhood is not a safe place to feed. You can make sure the animal doesn't get familiar with your neighbourhood by responding to it aggressively to scare it off. Make yourself appear large, make lots of noise and throw items at the coyote. If the animal continues to approach you, back away towards a building. Don't run, as the coyote will be encouraged to chase you.

You can keep your kids safe by making sure they know what to do if they see a coyote. If you know a coyote has been in the area, make sure to supervise your children while they are outside, and remind them not to leave food outside.

You should also monitor your pets when they are outside, and clean up after them as pet waste can attract coyotes. Cats shouldn't be allowed to roam, and dogs should be kept on a leash.
