City Council was busy on Monday night (November 20), passing a number of bylaws and addressing correspondence during the meeting's afternoon session.

Council gave second readings to a bylaw enacting a new franchise agreement with ATCO. First reading was done on April 3 of this year. The bylaw also nullifies the previous franchise agreement.

Council also made amendments the the City's Procedure Bylaw. Director of the CAO's office Sharon Pollyck explained that the amendments were all housekeeping items that came to light while preparing for the new Council's orientation. The amendments were mostly minor word changes to reflect the current processes of Council or names of documents. The bylaw received three unanimous readings.

Council also dealt with two correspondence items. Councillors voted unanimously to proclaim November 28 Giving Tuesday in Airdrie after a request from Volunteer Airdrie.

Council was also asked by an individual resident to consider holding a menorah lighting in December to celebrate Hanukkah. Pollyck commented that if Council voted to proceed with the request, staff recommended that the event be organized by the individual and not by the City. Ultimately, Council voted 5-1 on a motion from Councillor Ron Chapman to file the request as correspondence, taking no action. Mayor Peter Brown was the only one to vote against that motion, while Deputy Mayor Candice Kolson was absent from the meeting and did not vote.
