On July 4, 2016, a member of the public approached City Council requesting support to establish a bee research and training facility.

Tonight (April 3) at City Council, members will hear from Ann Wood, Land Administrator and Project Planner, Will Czaban on the results of their research.

The request includes the use of Fletcher Lands which is co-owned by the City of Airdrie, the Rocky View School Division and the Calgary Catholic School Division.

The facility will use approximately 2000 square feet of land for a Quonset type building that would allow 8-10 workers, researchers and volunteers.

The primary function would be research into areas such as overwintering, swarming and bee diseases, as well as a secondary use for education and training for the public and school groups.

If the City of Airdrie supports the motion, it will also need to be agreed upon by both Rocky View and the Calgary Catholic School Division.

The full proposal is available on the City of Airdrie website.
