To say that last night’s (August 21st) City Council meeting was busy is an understatement as Councillors were up late discussing a variety of topics.

Mayor Peter Brown says that one of the biggest items was a public hearing on the Cannabis Consumption By-Law.

“Where Marijuana can be sold. That was tabled and it will be coming back to Council in 2 weeks and they'll be providing some options that were not listed so I encourage people to have a look at that.”

Council also heard numerous presentations from residents and the Airdrie and Area Health Benefits Co-operative who gave an update on the Smart Cities Challenge and the Blue Zone Initiative.

Mayor Brown also talked about a couple key financial issues at the council.

“We endorsed an Asset Management Policy which is one that we’ve been waiting on for a long time. We have over 700 million dollars worth of assets in this community and that continues to grow and every day it depreciates so it’s obviously key to managing our funds, making sure that we’re doing the right thing with our assets.”

“The endorsement of a fiscal framework and that’s something that I would encourage every resident and every business to go have a look at. We’re going to be having some open houses to talk about the future and the cost related to managing a city of our size.”

Another big item that was tabled until the next council meeting regarded a part of the City that is split between residential commercial use.
