A new water conservation method has been implemented for the City of Airdrie after Monday's city council meeting.

Bylaw No. B-04 has been approved and is now in effect for the city. The new bylaw includes a watering schedule for Airdrie residents that aims to cut down on our current water usage.

Glenn Archer, the team leader with the city's water services shares how the new watering schedule will work.

"Addresses ending in an even number, that's 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 may water on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays. Addresses ending in odd numbers, 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 may water on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays."

The new bylaw also includes water restrictions that would only come into effect in case of a water shortage. Residents and businesses would be notified through various communication channels if a level two or three Water Use Restriction was declared.

The City of Airdrie is one of more than ten municipalities that rely on the Bow and Elbow rivers for their water supply. These bodies of water provide drinking water, habitats for plant and aquatic life and are important for agriculture, recreation, and tourism industry.

Archer explains the importance of Airdrie's water conservation plans.

"We're aligning ourselves with lots of cities in Canada and the US that are realizing that there are limited amounts of water. Our watershed in particular in southern Alberta is stressed right now and we just think that Airdrie should participate and do our best in conserving water."
