I scream, you scream, we all scream, for ice cream!

If you were doing that yesterday (June 24) you didn't have to scream very loudly to be heard by someone that would accommodate your needs as a pair of Airdrie grocery retailers had just the thing.

The Safeway store in the Tower Lane Mall and Sobeys on MacKenzie Way were taking donations of $2 which would get you an ice cream treat and support the store's two community organizations at the same time.

Safeway was raising money for Community Links while Sobeys chose the Airdrie Boy's and Girl's Club as their charity.

Jessica Nash, Manager of Events and Volunteer Coordination with the Boy's and Girl's Club said the fundraiser was huge for them.  "We are feeling the downturn and it's affecting all the way to our families and the programs that we're offering so something like this is great because it gives us the opportunity to send a lot more kids to camp this year.  Without it, we wouldn't be able to do it."

Nash says the club is holding eight weeks of summer camp which can accommodate around 110 kids per week.  "A lot of our families that haven't had to use subsidy before, they're in a position that they need to because they just don't have it.  We're one of the most affordable places that you can send a kid for a week of camp.   We feel wonderful being able to help those families that have never had to ask for help before."

The ice cream fundraiser was a western Canada wide effort by Safeway and Sobeys.  100 per cent of funds raised supported local youth organizations. The two grocery retailers are also matching donations of up to $100,000 across western Canada.
