A program that helps Airdrie families in need with basic, essential supplies just got a big boost from an Airdrie club.

Community Links' Silent Santa Program was presented with a cheque for $6,000 by the Airdrie Kin Club.  Intake Staff member Tim MacDonald explains that the club has made a donation to them for several years now.

While the name 'Silent Santa' suggests a seasonal program it actually assists families year-round, according to MacDonald.

"There are many, many people that we help with this program throughout the year.  It's called Silent Santa but we're able to help people 12 months of the year with some substantial financial help if it's needed."

MacDonald says the program has assisted people in some very practical ways.

"Some of the funds help people to get to medical appointments to see a doctor, to go to a job interview or help them get some equipment that they might need for work or even a gas card to help them to get to their first few days of work so they can get some money coming in.  Another thing that comes up is sometimes we have to help a woman change the locks on her door due to a domestic situation.  It's the basic things that people need.  Transportation and safety and food sometimes.  If they're not able to make it to the Airdrie Food Bank we're able to help with some funds for basic food things or baby needs if there's an emergency situation that's happening with their family."

If someone wants to help the Silent Santa Program you can make a donation at the Community Links office in Airdrie or online through their website and click on the Donate Today button.
