Today (February 6) is the second last day of Eating Disorder Awareness Week, which runs February 1-7.

Linda Mackenzie, Family Counsellor with Community Links, explained that raising awareness about eating disorders is important because it can help reduce the stigma and break the isolation felt by those that suffer.

"I think that sometimes when people suffer from an eating disorder, there can be a stigma attached to that and it definitely is a particular kind of suffering where the individual is sometimes mostly suffering in silence until they get to break that silence."

Mackenzie said there are many misconceptions about the type of person that is affected by an eating disorder. Many people falsely believe that only women or teenage girls suffer. Mackenzie said that is simply not true.

"It can look different for everybody. I think that that is a really good concept, that it can impact boys and girls, it can impact adults, males, females as well as seniors."

It can sometimes be difficult for family members to know how to help a loved one struggling with an eating disorder. Mackenzie said if you think a loved one is suffering, you should approach them, but in a way that is loving, supportive and caring. You should never place blame or judgement. Rather, you should try to state your observations and use "I" statements to convey your concern and support. This can empower someone that is struggling to seek the help they need. You can also offer to go to the doctor with them, help them find resources, or go to a support group.

Mackenzie said there are lots of resources in Airdrie for anyone that is struggling. Community Links offers both counselling and support groups, while AHS has many resources including an eating disorder program for youth at the Children's Hospital.

In the end, Mackenzie has this message for anyone that is struggling with an eating disorder.

"I guess all I can say is that if you're struggling with an eating disorder, know that you're not alone and the most important thing is to break the silence and reach out to people that can provide some support to you."
