The Airdrie community garden is located in the fields of Monkland.

As the population continues to grow, demand for gardening plots continues to rise.

"We've got over 140 people and counting on our waiting list, and that waiting list the last we picked from was 2014 for this year." said Rosa West, President of the Airdrie and District Horticultural Society.

The horticultural society is in charge of the board for the community garden, but it is operated and maintained by volunteers.

Plots are relatively affordable, costing $30/per-year for 100 square feet.

"We're giving out double plots because we had extra plots and nobody was taking care of them," said West. "We dont anymore since we have such a long list now."

The garden does it's part to give back to the community, by offering a plot for kids to learn to garden, and even growing vegetables for the Airdrie Foodbank.

Despite receiving an expansion in 2012 with the help of the City, West adds that there are members of the community who wish to build a second garden.

According to Phil McNeil, operations coordinator with the City of Airdrie Parks department, the city is aware of the waitlist.

"We met with those residents and provided information on what the city contributes, as well as what they would be responsible for. There is a lot of work involved in creating and running a community garden, which can be a bit of a deterrent for people interested in community gardening."
