A local horse sanctuary just north of Cochrane is having trouble with collecting enough food to feed their horses over the winter.

Sandie Hucal, Director of the Free Spirit Sanctuary says there are a lot of factors contributing to the lack of Hay.

"Basically we are in a position where we are seeking urgently to find hay for the winter, because of the draught this part of the province experienced this summer our pasture was grazed back in August."

Normally the horses would be grazing until this time of year however with the draught and the early winter the sanctuary was forced to run through supply faster than normal.

The regular provider for the sanctuary did not get a crop this year according to Hucle.

"We thought we had something else lined up and when we went last week to arrange delivery we found out it had fallen through, so we have been left in a not desirable position looking for Hay in late October."

The Free Spirit Sanctuary is asking for the public to lend a hand with finding a supplier or donation.

"Basically what we are asking for help for is two-fold, one is to source hay and we are hoping that there are some people out there we can make a connection and source some hay. The tremendous price of hay this year has put a damper on our efforts"

According to Hucal, the small squares of hay are going for $12 a square without delivery.

For anyone that would like to help the sanctuary, they can call or go online to the Free Spirit Sanctuary's website.
