You might have noticed signs discouraging tobogganing at some popular sledding spots like the East Lake hill recently.

Archie Lang, Manager of Parks and Public Works with the City of Airdrie, said they have been installing signage as a way to encourage people to use the City's designated toboggan hills.

"They've been put up fairly recently, and we obviously are encouraging people to use the designated toboggan hills that we have in the city. There's one in Coopers Crossing, there's a small toboggan hill there, and of course we have our large toboggan hill at Chinook Winds Regional Park."

Lang explained the signs originally said "No Tobogganing". They've since been changed to give people more information that certain spots are not designated sledding hills and may pose a risk.

Lang said the East Lake hill in particular was never an established tobogganing hill, and is not regularly inspected to make sure it is safe.

"The question always comes to, is it actually safe if we're not doing regular inspections on it. I know that people have been tobogganing on it in years past. We're encouraging people to use the toboggan hills that actually have been designed to be tobogganed on."

As for enforcement, Lang said there won't be strict consequences if people don't heed the signs.

"We're not going to be ticketing anybody for using it. It's for the public, use at your own risk if that's what they want to do. We certainly don't recommend it."

Lang said at the end of the day, it is all about keeping children safe.
