The City of Airdrie passed their Cannabis Consumption Bylaw at City Council Monday night (August 20).

Under the new bylaw, the consumption of cannabis in public places will be prohibited.

The city, however, does plan on creating a public consumption spot in Airdrie in hopes that residents will use the location instead of using cannabis in public places.

According to Kari Kituik with the City of Airdrie, the consumption site will be located by Sierra Springs.

"The consumption spot will be south of the Co-op development site of Sierra Springs and on the west side of the natural area."

Kituik also says the city is looking at different ways to measure the usage of the site.

"We are still developing the way we look at the usage of the site but we can do drive-bys, how much a waste bin is being used.  If we put a butt stop is it getting used? Those items should let us know if it's being used or not."

The consumption area will be on a one year trial period to determine if there is a need for it.
