At last night's (May 15) City Council meeting, Councillors gave three readings to this year's tax rate bylaw.

According to the Municipal Government Act, the City must pass a tax rate bylaw every year. That bylaw allows the City to raise funds to operate the municipality and to collect and remit education tax to the Alberta School Foundation Fund.

Previously, the City approved a 0.6% tax rate increase with the 2017 Operating Budget. That increase will result in a rise of $1.19 per month on municipal taxes.

Airdrie also faced an 8.5% increase in education tax this year from the province. Due to growth, that increase is split between more people. That means that homeowners can expect an increase of 4.7%, or $3.71 per month, on their education tax.

When those two rates are combined, the average single family residential property will see an increase of $4.90 per month on their property tax bill.

The new tax bylaw was adopted on third reading with a 5-1 vote.

Info on this years municipal taxes will be mailed out on May 30, one month of the deadline to pay the taxes on June 30.
