A new study suggests that Canadians waste half of the food produced in Canada.

The City of Airdrie is trying to educate residents to help reduce those numbers through programs such as the Waste and Recycling week as well and the cities compost program.

Susan Grimm with the Waste and Recycling department says they are making attempts to educate the public further on this issue.

" We actually structured our 2018 waste reduction week around wasting food, we had sessions and learning opportunities to learn about what to do with leftovers and I think it really starts with what people are buying."

The City is aiming to educate residents more in 2019.

"We are structuring our entire 2019 education campaign on our waste audit and specifically how we are going to get those items that don't belong in the garbage to the right places using the green carts, blue carts and compost."

According to Grimm, the City has been improving when it comes to composting foods.

" We did really well in diverting over 600 metric tonnes of organics but our audit shows we still have some work to do in that area."
