Monday's City Council meeting (March 6) included an update on the recognition of community builders in Airdrie.

Archie Lang, Manager of Parks and Public Works, summarized what has happened since City staff were directed to look into the feasibility of memorializing some of Airdrie's recently passed founders on February 4th, 2016. Lang also brought forward five points for the Council to approve in regards to this recognition process.

One of the main points was the designation of an area at the north end of Nose Creek Park for a memorial grove. The grove would serve as a memorial to citizens that significantly shaped the city through volunteering on a City Council board, committee or commission. Councillor Allan Hunter had some questions about the viability of trees in that area, and Councillor Candice Kolson wondered about the watering schedule for those trees. Lang assured the Council that as the grove would be the only memorial grove in the City, it would be a priority.

Other points included revising the City's memorial policy by rescinding a 2011 version and adopting a new 2017 version, outlining the nomination and selection process, and the establishment of a civic leadership memorial to commemorate those that have volunteered with Council's board and committees.

Ultimately, the Council voted unanimously to approve the points presented by Lang.
