The Airdrie City Council met yesterday in a meeting to discuss various bylaws, readings and budget decisions.

The biggest discussion on the agenda was the 2019-2021 Operating and 2019-2028 Capital Budget regarding increases in taxes such as the property tax.

The council debated for quite some time before putting it to a vote, where the all of the council except Mayor Peter Brown and Councillor Al Jones agreed to support the budget. However, Mayor Peter Brown said he agreed with “99%” of the budget, it was only some minor increases that he disagreed with.

Following the budget deliberations, two bylaws were brought up for proposed readings. Bylaw B-45 proposes a Fortis Alberta franchise fee increase, and council approved the three readings. Bylaw B-42 is to amend the rates in the Water, Sewer and Waste Management Utilities and the council approved of the three readings.

After the two bylaw reading proposals, Mayor Brown discussed the situation where an Airdrie RCMP member was hit by a young adult in a police chase. Brown was displeased with the man, 25-year-old Skyler Stevens-Rose, and had several things to say.

“Move, go somewhere else,” said Mayor Brown. "Airdrie doesn't stand for this and this behaviour is completely unacceptable.

After a brief public question period, Bylaw B-32 was brought forward for three readings. The bylaw is meant to turn a portion of property known as 516 2 Avenue NE in Airdrie from Service Commercial Districts to Village Residential Districts.

The readings and the bylaw was approved.
