Rocky View Schools Trustees approved a change to one of their elementary schools to help with issues of overcapacity.

Director of Facility Planning, Collete Winter, explains the change.

The grade structure for Cooper's Crossing School will soon change from K-4 to K-5

“Cooper’s Crossing School is currently a K-4 School. We are now going to be changing the structure to a K-5 School. We’re going to be moving forward with that as of September 2018.”

Winter says that the change was necessary as Windsong Heights is projected to hit 103% capacity in September, just one year after it opened and it will still be another year until the new school in Hillcrest will be ready.

As RVS is running out of schools to place their kids in, Winter says that situations like this show how much news schools are desperately needed.

“The biggest issue is that there's just no room in our schools for any more children. We have new communities coming on board and there will be children coming into these communities and they need a designated school. We could designate them to School A, but it’s full or we could designate them to School B, it’s full as well, how about School C, that’s also full.”

RVS also recently approved a new three year Capital Plan, requesting 4 news schools from the Provincial Government over the next three years.
