The Airdrie Festival of Lights committee has faced some big challenges this year.

With the recent requirement to upgrade the entire wiring and electrical boxes to GFCI, the committee has had to spend almost $50,000 restringing every display with LCD lights.

In May, the committee put a call out for volunteers to help string the displays, but found that due to people's schedules they weren't able to get as many as they needed.

"Originally we had probably close to 100 families that had signed up to come and help us, in the end we probably had about 15 to 20 that actually committed and actually worked on lights with us," said Michelle Pirzek, Airdrie Festival of Light's Coordinator.

Currently, the committee has been able to completely re-string 75 to 80 per cent of the displays, with a hope of continuing all the way through to the end of the Festival.

"We didn't reach 100 per cent, not for lack of trying and heart. We'll continue, I mean even as the season is open your going to find our guys are down at the park and wiring, we're not giving up. Until we pack up we're not giving up."

Pirzek hopes to be able to add a display a night until everything is complete.

There is still a need for an additional 24,000 bulbs, which will cost $15,000 that is currently not in the budget.

To help complete the project, Pirzek is hopeful that people who are able to donate more at the gates will do so this year.
