Summer is a great time to get yourself in shape.

The possibilities are virtually endless.  Swimming, biking, hiking, skateboarding, running and walking.  Not only are the aforementioned activities good for you, but they can also be good for wildlife as well.  Provided you're doing those things for them.

On August 3rd a wildlife centre located north of Airdrie will launch its third annual fitness challenge fundraiser.  The Workout for Wildlife, or WOW! for short, is a project of the Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) located in Madden which has been a champion for wildlife conservation since 1993, caring for injured and orphaned animals.

This year, AIWC has witnessed a drastic increase in demand for their services, which has led to an increased need for funding to support the care of wildlife,  AIWC has already admitted over 1,035 animals in 2021, including high-need baby animals such as a badger cub, infant flying squirrels and even four black bear cubs.

AIWC is encouraging anyone with fitness goals to put them to work for wildlife by collecting pledges for the organization.  Registered participants can undertake whatever type of fitness suits them.  WOW! is your chance to connect to Alberta's wildlife, to Alberta's natural environment and to your fitness goals.

During the nearly three weeks of the fitness campaign, participants will learn fun facts about Alberta wildlife species and earn prizes as they reach movement and fundraising milestones. Every dollar raised through WOW! will go towards supporting Alberta’s injured and orphaned wildlife species of all shapes and sizes, from baby birds to orphaned moose calves.

There are prizes to be won for top pledge earners, and all registrants will receive an AIWC swag bag.
