Despite the RCMP warning to not leave your vehicle idling unattended to warm it up, a car theft took place yesterday (December 31) as that very scenario happened.

Corporal Michael Dunsmore says yesterday, between 8:30 am and 8:40 am, a customer at the Wingate Hotel, located at 513 Gateway Road in Airdrie, started their car to let it warm up with the temperature near minus 30.

"Two suspects showed up in a black sedan (pictured at right) and ended up stealing the car that was warming up. The car taken was a baby blue

Volkswagen Rabbit Golf and was parked in front of the main entrance."

The two suspects were a female and a male, both between 20 and 30 years of age.  The female was Caucasian with black hair and was approximately 5' 11"in height.

The male was Caucasian, wore a ball cap and was also about 5' 11".

Dunsmore says the theft is unfortunate, but was easily preventable.

"We remind everyone to make sure they lock their vehicle and not leave it unattended.  Don't leave the keys in the vehicle, use remote starters where possible and takes the necessary steps to protect your property.  This is an issue we've seen all across the province, in all municipalities.  People need to, quite literally, lock it up or lose it."

Anyone with information about this theft is asked to contact Constable Nicholas Wyczynski at the Airdrie RCMP by calling 403 945-7200 or call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
