Some people are born in Canada. For others, this country is their chosen home. Regardless, everyone is excited to celebrate our nation as it marks its 150th anniversary this weekend on Canada Day, and that includes members of Airdrie's immigrant community.

Angelica Torres has lived in Canada for almost eight years. Compared to her native Columbia, Torres says the thing she appreciates most about Canada is the equality found here.

"That's what I like about Canada is that for everybody, it's kind of the same. Even though you're rich or broke or whatever, you live in the same places you eat the same food. I like that. And then the other thing is that nobody takes anything that doesn't belong to them. It's those values that I like."

Like most other Canadians, Torres isn't above complaining about the weather. However, she says the warm spirit and respect Canadians have for one another is another thing she loves about the country.

Ildiko Balazs (right) immigrated to Canada from Transylvania seven years ago. She remembers her first thoughts upon arriving here.

"My first impression was everybody was smiling. It was nice. People were open and welcoming and helpful."

When asked her favourite thing about Canada, Balazs responds through a laugh that it's Tim Hortons. She also loves Canada's natural beauty.

Luzstella Villate also said she loves the natural beauty of Canada, especially Airdrie's open skies. Villate arrived in Canada nine years ago from Columbia, and shared what she loves about the nation.

"Canada for me is a great country where my kids were born. I have a lot of opportunities for a more peaceful and different life."

All three are as excited as anyone for Canada Day, and plan to dress up and decorate to celebrate the big anniversary.
