Forget Cannes and Sundance, Airdrie will be the talk of the film festival town this fall.

On Tuesday (June 20th), the newly formed Airdrie Film Society announced a new Film Festival for the city in September.

Society member Kim Cheel says the idea for a festival has been growing for a while.

"We did something 2 years ago, 2015, in conjunction with Artember where we did a smaller film festival...(we) kinda did a talk back with people about how we can raise the awareness of film in Airdrie."

The festival will be looking for submissions any Canadian filmmakers but Cheel hopes that those from Airdrie shouldn't be afraid to show their work.

"We don't have to be apologetic to bring people out to Airdrie to witness great film and all this other stuff that Airdrie can offer, but also for filmmakers, they don't have to be apologetic for remaining in Airdrie to do their crafts."

When it comes to embracing the love of movies in the city, Cheel says it's a no brainer because movies are always there.

"In terms of performaing arts, film is also going to be on the top of that hierarchy just because for a lot of people it's so immediate. You can go see film and it seems more accessible for people."

The festival will run on September 23rd and you can find more on the Airdrie Film Society's website.
