This morning (November 2), the newly elected Rocky View School Board met for the first time and held an organizational meeting.

During the meeting, the board elected a new Chair and Vice-Chair, and also appointed members to various committees and boards.

Airdrie Trustee Todd Brand, who had served as Vice-Chair for all four years of his first term, was selected by his colleagues to sit as Board Chair. Nominated by Ward 5 Trustee Judi Hunter, Brand was unanimously elected to fill the spot vacated by former Chair Colleen Munro, who did not seek reelection to the Rocky View School Board.

Cochrane Trustee Fiona Gilbert was nominated as Vice-Chair by Ward 4 Trustee Norma Lang, and was also elected unanimously.

Brand said the appointment was an honour.

"It's a great privilege. I consider it another opportunity to serve and my goal will be to serve the rest of the board well as the Chair, help them to do their jobs really effectively, and help to build a sense of team so that we can make a positive impact on students."

Brand was also complimentary of his colleagues.

"I was very pleased that Trustee Gilbert came on as the Vice-Chair. I have a lot of confidence in her and I know she'll be able to support me well in this position as well. My early feeling is we have a really good board to work with here, and I'm excited to serve as Chair."

Gilbert echoed Brand's sentiments.

"I'm honoured to get the sense of support from the other trustees here. We are a new team of trustees and as a board here, and I feel privileged to be able to be a part of the leadership team of our board. Honestly, we all work together, we're part of a team, so I think we can do great things as we all work together."

Brand and Gilbert will sit as Chair and Vice-Chair for the next year, at which point another organizational meeting will be held to either reelect them or elect a new Chair or Vice-Chair.
