On July 1, the Seniors’ Home Adaptation and Repair program (Bill 5) became a reality.

After the bill was introduced by Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Seniors and Housing in April, it took 3 readings for the bill to pass.

Under the program, a maximum loan of $40,000 is available to seniors with an annual household income of $75,000 or less.

“This program will allow seniors to age in a community where they want to be, with their loved ones," said Sigurdson, "I am pleased to say that we already have a waiting list for our new program and we expect many of these projects to be underway soon.”

Seniors will be able to use the loan to allow better accessibility in their homes by widening hallways, installing a walk-in tub and many other repairs.

Low-income seniors who do not qualify under the loan program may still be eligible for a grant to help pay for essential home repairs.

Applications for the home equity loan are now available on the Government of Alberta website.
