The Big brothers and Big sisters group in Airdrie has been recognized by the city council.

September 18th has been proclaimed Big Brothers Big Sisters day here in Airdrie in hopes to shine a light on the work the group does in the community.

Jason Heer Mentoring Coordinator for the group explains some of the work they do in our community.

"We currently have mentoring programs in the community for children aged six to eighteen were we provide mentorship one on one for boys and girls in the community and in school mentoring in various schools during the day usually teens working with young children working in the school one hour a week."

Heer also says since his arrival he has seen a big demand for the program in Airdrie.

"Since I've taken over the role in the last six months there was a lack of awareness of our agency and our presence in the community and since my arrival, there has been a much more heightened awareness and we have seen an increase in people that want to volunteer and actually step up and help the kids in the community."

Heer also says it's important to note that the people involved in the program are all looking for different things.

"Some can be because of lack of parental supervision or influence in their life or some just come because they need additional support and are going through a certain phase in their current situation and they just need another adult apart from mom and dad that they can talk to."
