The good news is a Special Weather Statement ended for the Airdrie area in relation to snowfall for today. However, a snow squall watch has been put in its place.

Environment Canada is forecasting the snow to start late Friday morning and the wind is expected to pick up gusting 50-70 kilometres an hour.

“Snow squall watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the formation of bands of snow that could produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities,” said Environment Canada.

The national weather service is anticipating snow squalls to develop late this morning and into this afternoon as an intense cold front moves across southern Alberta. It’s expected to produce brief periods of intense snowfall and reduced visibilities.

Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common and could pose a risk to drivers. The risk will diminish early this evening as the front pushes south.

The Snow squall watch in effect for:

  • Rocky View Co. near Airdrie and Crossfield
  • Rocky View Co. near Bottrel and Madden
  • Rocky View Co. near Cochrane
  • Mountain View Co. near Carstairs and Stirlingville
  • Mountain View Co. near Cremona and Water Valley
  • Mountain View Co. near Olds and Didsbury
  • Mountain View Co. near Sundre

Much of Central and southern Alberta are under watches or warnings for wind, snowfall, or snow squalls as of 6:00 am Friday morning.
