More and more people from Airdrie and across Alberta have been giving to the fire relief efforts in BC.

While it is encouraging to see many charities collecting donations, you need to be sure you're giving to the right ones.

"Any organization claiming to be a charity must be registered with the Canada Revenue Agency," says Leah Brownridge with the Better Business Bureau of Southern Alberta, "If they can't provide proof of that registration, that's a red flag that you may be dealing with an illegitimate organization,"

Brownridge also says to be careful of any online groups that are fundraising for the cause.

"You just want to take extra caution. It doesn't mean that it's necessarily a scam but make sure you know the individual who's setting up the fundraising page. If it's a stranger, that's where some things could go wrong, you may not know exactly where all of those funds are going."

Some of the other tips the BBB are offering include being careful with "100%" claims, avoid sending cash and noting that when it comes to disaster relief some items will take time to get there.

Brownridge mentions that you should research any organization that claims to be right on site.

"Find out if they have an actual presence on site, where the disaster is happening. Can they get those goods and services and the money to those that need it quickly and effectively."
