After this weeks announcement of the high levels of radon gas discovered in Southern Alberta homes, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) believes scam artists may use this to their advantage.

According to the BBB, in Calgary and surrounding area, the radon gas levels in homes exceed the normal levels, by 12.4%. Homes in Cochrane had the highest levels of radon gas in Southern Alberta.

It is expected, with this alarming news that many homeowners will soon be on the lookout for a credible radon testing company, in order to ensure that their homes are safe.

The BBB says that it is absolutely crucial to be diligent in your search for a radon testing company, as they believe scammers will take advantage of people's distress regarding the safety of their homes.

In January, the Alberta government passed a bill forbidding the door-to-door solicitation of home energy products. However, radon testing is still permitted to be promoted through door-to-door sales. This creates the ideal situation for con artists.

Leah Brownridge, from the Better Business Bureau says for homeowners there are a couple ways to be cautious about door-to-door solicitation.

"Especially when it comes to door knockers the number one thing homeowners should be checking for is licensing," said Brownridge.

Alternate options for individuals needing some peace of mind, and wanting to get their homes tested can be to purchase a home radon-testing kit for less than $50 from the Lung Association, or you can check with the BBB for reviews on honest home radon testing professionals.
