A weekend winter storm has led to multiple collisions and forced the closure of Deerfoot Trail in both directions between McKnight Boulevard and Anderson Road in Calgary.

Emergency crews and police are trying to deal with the crashes that have involved dozens of vehicles.

The collisions occurred after the snow started to fall at around 11:00 am.

Calgary Police decided to close Deerfoot Trail by about noon.  Drivers are being asked to stay away from the area.

There's no report on when the road may re-open.
