The Airdrie Fire Department would like to remind residents to be considerate neighbours this summer.

Deputy Fire Chief Linda Masson said recently some residents have been burning substances that produce a lot of smoke.

"Most of the problems we encounter with the fire pits are smoke and its smoke that is bothering neighbours. When we did the research on this, for the most part, it was people burning inappropriate material such as burning leaves or paper or cardboard all of which make a lot of smoke."

Masson also said the only substance that should be burned is untreated dry wood.

Residents should also follow some responsible practices for fire pit use such as having the fire pits three meters away from any combustible material.

People should also have a spark arrestor to cover the fire pit opening and the opening should not be more than a meter in length.

Masson also said that it's important to consider the weather conditions when it comes to having a backyard fire.

"You should really consider what direction and how strong the wind is blowing, sometimes it ends up blowing right into your neighbours home or the fire can get away on you."
