Christmas decorations add to the beauty and delight of the Christmas season, but they can also pose a risk of fire.

Linda Maason, Deputy Chief with the Airdrie Fire Department, has a few recommendations to follow in order to avoid any unfortunate winter fires.

"When you do have your lights and decoration up, we suggest that you periodically check the strings and wires, because they should not be warm to touch. If they are, then you have a problem."

The Fire Department also recommend the following tips to prevent fires:

  • Check your smoke alarm
  • Don't leave candles unattended
  • Keep your Christmas tree well watered
  • Check lights for cracks or frayed cords
  • Always stay in the kitchen while cooking
  • Don't overload electrical outlets
  • Keep matches and lighters out of reach of children
  • Give space to space heaters
  • Safely dispose of cigarettes
  • Have a fire escape plan

The Fire Department will be sharing fire safety tips on Twitter and the City's website until Christmas.
