The month of August is Impaired Driving Month, and RCMP want you to know the limit.

RCMP remind Albertans that driving impaired, whether by alcohol, drugs, fatigue or distraction, is a huge risk to everyone around you.

"I think the basic message is don't drive while impaired by alcohol or drugs. Impaired drivers pose a significant risk on the road ways of Alberta every day." said Cpl. Hal Turnbull, Strategic Communications, RCMP.

Police may disqualify you from driving and seize your vehicle for 24 hours if you are unable to safely operate a motor vehicle due to drugs, alcohol, medical condition, or physical ability.

Over the past five years, approximately 8,600 people were convicted of impaired driving in Alberta annually.

Between 2009-2013 almost 90 people were killed and 1,330 people were injured each year in accidents where at least on driver was impaired.

The Alberta Government wants drivers to remember that drugs pose as much of a threat as alcohol in terms of impairment.

“It comes as a surprise to many people that drunk driving and drugged driving carry the same criminal charges. This is because both substances impair a driver’s ability and increase the likelihood of being involved in a collision,” says Brian Mason, Alberta Minister of Transportation.
