Airdrie RCMP are investigating after two men tried to steal an ATM from the front entrance of Safeway early yesterday morning (January 3).

Cst. Dan Martin said the two men smashed a front entrance glass door to get into the store, and were in the process of attempting to attach a tow strap to what's believed to be a white pickup truck, possibly a Ford, when their efforts were thwarted.

"A couple employees that were working in the back heard the alarms go off and they ran up and startled the two suspects who then fled in the truck southbound on Main Street. The suspects were unable to obtain the ATM and they left the tow strap behind."

Martin said an employee was able to give a decent description of one of the suspects. He's described as 6'3" tall with a thin build, and was wearing a band over his face, sun glasses and a white construction hard hat. Police did not obtain a description of the second man or a license plate number for the truck.

Martin said at this point, police can't say if this incident is related to a similar ATM theft from Sobey's on December 7.

"We don't have enough evidence to say that they're related concretely or anything like that, but there's obviously a good possibility."
