Airdrie skaters are eager to hit the outdoor rinks.

With Winter creeping up, it won't be long before they can do just that.

"A consistent -10 degrees Celsius is perfect, it's ideal for us, or colder of course, but if it gets too cold, it doesn't make very good ice either." said Kevin Brinson, Parks Team Leader, City of Airdrie.

Currently, the City of Airdrie maintains nine outdoor rinks. Six of those rinks have boards, and three are snow banked. All of the rinks are flooded daily.

There are also three natural ice surfaces for skating. These are only plowed when the ice is around 10-12 inches thick.

"We have a crew of three, a Zamboni driver and two on the water truck." said Brinson.

Flooding takes place early in the morning, to avoid disrupting use of the rinks. Daily inspections also take place on the boarded rinks.

You can find a full list of the skating surfaces at the City of Airdrie website.
