The green cart organics program is celebrating it's second year in the City of Airdrie.

With a response from residents that the love is starting to fade for the organics bin, the city is looking at ways to reignite that love.

Eight different challenges have been created by the city to get households to think outside the box when it comes to recycling.

One of the challenges is called 'Get Messy', which involves opening up your garbage and going through it to pull out all the things that can be recycled. Once all the items are removed, you can take a photo and send it to the organics email.

The Waste and Recycling department has put together a list to help with some of the daily discomforts caused by the smell of the organics bin;

• Sprinkle baking powder in your kitchen catcher and/or green cart
• Line your green cart with single piece of newspaper/cardboard
• Try a new style of kitchen catcher – there are many styles available in stores
• Try a paper bag liner for your green carts
• Washing your green cart with vinegar
• Keep your contents frozen until organics collection day in the summer
• Keep your bin stored in a cool place out of the sun
• Leave your grass on the lawn or cut it the day or two before organics collection day

By participating in the organics challenge, you can be entered to win free organics collection for one year.
