Airdrie is about to see some interesting weather in the next couple of days when a cold front hits the city.

Robyn Dick, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, said that starting today, Airdrie could get some colder weather and rain.

"We'll see the cold front slide through for (today), so that's why we'll see a chance of showers (...)."

Today has a chance of thunderstorms thanks to the recent warm weather.

"This time of year if it gets pretty warm, we've got that cold front that can initiate thunderstorms. That is a chance this time of year."

Dick said that Airdrie will be getting the colder weather.

"The pattern we're in now, we have a low-pressure system that's tracking to our north, so Northern Alberta. It will track east, so we're getting the cold front. Then we will actually see basically a north-west flow for the next few days and that's basically an arctic ridge of high pressure that slumps over the province. With that, that brings in some cold air."

The weekend, according to Dick, could bring more cold weather and precipitation that could become snow.

"Basically what happens, come the weekend, so come Thursday night and Friday is we do switch to a southerly flow, bringing in some moisture, and as we know in Alberta, a bit of upslope flow. But, it's cold. That high, over Northern Alberta will bring in the cold air. During the day, temperatures do get on the plus side so we have ranges of plus 5 to plus 10, somewhere in there but overnight we do get below zero. With that, if we get any precipitation overnight, that could be in the form of snow."

However, it doesn't look like the snow will stay long.

"The ground is fairly warm. It doesn't look at this point to be anything significant in terms of amount or intensity. That indicates that it would probably melt fairly quickly. However, looking at the long range, the longer you look out, the more uncertain it is."

Despite the low temperatures, this is about normal for Airdrie around this time of year.

"Our normal for this time of year for Airdrie is a high of plus 12 and a low of minus 1. As we get out into the beginning of May, it doesn't look to recover too quickly. We'll still be on the plus side, but I don't see a plus 20 in the next little while."
