If you frequently drive down 1st Ave., just before Main Street, you may have noticed some detours on Thursday, July 21, and Friday, July 22.

The reason for the closure was due to a leak in the main water line, located underneath the road.

"The water main runs under the road and from that main, service connections go to every property. One of those service connections had a leak so crews dug down and replaced the entire service," said Glenn Archer, team leader of Water Services with the City of Airdrie.

While the leak did not cause any damage, Archer said the city takes every water leak seriously, whether it be big or small.

"All leaks are significant. We don't accept leaks in our water system so when we find them, we fix them. In this case, the resident had reported that they had low water pressure and we investigated and determined it was a leak."

While 1st Ave. was opened up for the evenings and weekend, residents and drivers can expect it to be closed down for paving crews to come in a re-pave the piece of road that was worked on.

"We gather up a number of these smaller repairs and then we have a crew come in and do them all at once. When they do the road repair, they will close the road again for the period of the repair," said Archer.

It is uncertain what day the road closure will be occurring.
