After much discussion and public input, a Legislative Committee said no to removing Daylight Saving Time for Alberta today (September 19).

The Private Member's Bill was originally brought forward by NDP MLA Thomas Dang earlier this year.

Although a recent survey showed many in Alberta want to do away with the twice a year time change, there were others that were worried about the losses they would incur as a result. That included big corporations like WestJet and even the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers, who were concerned about later start times as a result of axing daylight saving.

If the bill had passed, the province would have stayed in the same time zone as Saskatchewan, creating "Alberta Standard Time". The move would have put the province two hours ahead of British Columbia for half the year.

Many Albertans also believed that if the bill went to a referendum, it would have cost too much.

Daylight Savings Time ends on November 5th.
