Nearly forty years after his historic run across Canada took the country by storm, Airdrie students are continuing the legacy of Terry Fox.

Throughout September, many Airdrie schools have held their annual runs with students of all ages participating.

One of those schools was W.H. Croxford, who held their first ever run on September 28. Student Rylan Walker says his fellow classmates really embraced the run.

"I think it's been awesome, really raising school spirit as well as awareness for disease that affects so many people."

For many, the run holds personal significance. Student Alejandra Gutierrez is one of the students running on behalf of someone currently battling the disease, or who have battled cancer in the past.

"It means everything to me. I just lost an aunt to cancer. This is a big, powerful thing that our school is doing for Airdrie and Canada in general."

Earlier today (September 29) École Airdrie Middle School held their annual run. Avery, a grade 7 student, explained why the Terry Fox Run was important to her.

"Cancer affects so many people and it's so horrible, and I feel like it's our job to help them get through it."

The school blew away their goal of raising $1000. Teacher Raylene Kennedy said EAMS had counted $1700 of donations as of today, but there were more donations that hadn't been counted. The school will have an official tally on Monday (October 2).

A.E. Bowers will be taking part in their Terry Fox Run on October 2nd.

Yesterday, three Cochrane schools: Cochrane High, Manachaban Middle School and Elizabeth Barrett Elementary School joined together for their annual run.
