Airdrie's Ryan Strashchnitzki has undergone a lengthy surgery at a Saskatchewan hospital after being injured in a horrific crash involving the Humboldt Broncos team bus and a tractor-trailer unit on Friday night that killed 15 players, coaches, and broadcasters.

Ryan's father Tom, in an email sent to Discover Airdrie, said Ryan had just emerged from a five-hour surgery yesterday (April 7) afternoon at 4:00 pm.  His parents were waiting to see their son.  His father confirmed that Ryan had suffered a broken back in the crash.

Tom says Ryan had been asking his doctors, his billet parents and his girlfriend how his coaches and teammates were doing.  Tom says that is Ryan's main concern.

The devastating crash has left the community of Humboldt, the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, the province of Saskatchewan and the entire nation of Canada in shock.  15 people died as a result and 14 were injured.  The investigation into the collision is ongoing and the cause is, as yet, unknown.

Condolences and messages of support have been pouring in from around the world.  The GoFundMe page, set up to help survivours and family members, has now topped $3 million.
