The #9pm routine is a social media initiative that started in North America.

The Airdrie RCMP want to work with the community to decrease crime, and so it has recently started being used in Airdrie as a reminder to residents to lock up at night.

Cst. Dan Martin says its really important to watch out for your neighbors and to leave lights on outside to deter people away from your homes.

"We strongly encourage residents to work with each other, look out for your neighbors beside you, if you don`t know who they are, get out and meet them."

For social media users who post to Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, the #9pm routine is a great reminder to secure their homes and belongings before they go to bed.

It is crucial to remove keys, wallets, garage door openers, laptops, sports equipment, cash and cell phones from vehicles at night before securing and locking the doors.

"We get calls about everything going missing, so make sure you remove your stuff and lock up your doors and try and help each other out."
