The Calgary Police Service (CPS) and Airdrie RCMP teamed up in a joint investigation to track down a man with 55 outstanding warrants including failures to appear in court, and driving and weapons-related offences.

Sometime around the middle of November, the CPS Offender Management Unit became aware of the suspect possibly living in the Airdrie area.

On Thursday, Nov. 29, the Airdrie Crime Reduction Unit, Airdrie General Investigative Section, Airdrie General Duty, Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Team and Southern Alberta Emergency Response Team all conducted a search warrant for firearms on a home in Luxstone but were unable to find the suspect. However, the suspect was soon spotted driving in the neighbourhood.

The man was followed into Calgary where he holed up inside a residence in the south-west area of the city and refused to come outside while indicating that he was armed with multiple weapons.

The CPS Tactical Unit was able to set up containment and conducted negotiations for several hours before the man surrendered with no further incident.

37-year-old Joed Smith was arrested with several imitation firearms, a crossbow, and some bear spray and will now face an additional 26 charges.

If anyone has any additional information regarding the incident, they are encouraged to contact the Airdrie RCMP detachment.
