For the second year in a row, a local member of the Airdrie Pro Rodeo royalty is heading to the national stage.

Ashley Hygaard is the current Airdrie Pro Rodeo Princess who is elated to share the next step in her journey.

“It’s very, very exciting news. I’ve been dreaming of this for a very long time. I’m hoping to be the Miss Rodeo Canada 2019.”

Hygaard follows in the footsteps of former Miss Pro Rodeo Airdrie Emily Marston who competed for Rodeo Canada last year

Hygaard was crowned Rodeo Princess in 2017, but when no contestants came forward for the 2018 Rodeo, she was able to keep the crown.

With her application all done and sent away, Hygaard is working hard to prepare for the big event.

“I am just studying every night. I have notebooks and I’m studying equine knowledge and my horsemanship skills. I keep going to Rodeos as the season goes on. I believe all of the contestants are going to be at the Grassroots Rodeo which will be held at the Calgary Stampede at the end of September.”

The Miss Rodeo Canada competition takes place during the Canadian Finals Rodeo from October 30th to November 4th in Red Deer.

Since winning the title of Rodeo Princess, Hygaard says the best part has been interacting with the community.

“The amazing thing for me through Airdrie was that I felt like I became a part of the community. I’m not from Airdrie, I’m from Manitoba actually so I moved here in 2015. It was really nice to get to know lots of people in the community and you see the same people that volunteer time over time and you build those friendships and that connection with the community is amazing.”
