A local non-profit group was recognized by MP Blake Richards yesterday (May 17th) for their 35 years of service to the community.

Four volunteers with Meals On Wheels joined Richards at his constituency office in Airdrie where he presented them with a certificate on behalf of the Government of Canada.

Richards was grateful to recognize Meals on Wheels, especially since they made an impact for a member of his family.

“I remember my Great-Grandmother when she was 92 years old still being in her own home and it was because of Meals on Wheels. There’s so many people that we can tell that same story about.”

One of the volunteers with Meals on Wheels, Lois Jones, says she’s proud to be a part of a group that helps the community no matter what.

“Just given this winter alone, I know a lot of people that were unable to make it work but yet our drivers, who volunteer their time in their vehicles, never missed a beat. All meals were delivered.”

Another volunteer who was on hand for the presentation was Sonia Swenson, who couldn’t emphasize enough how willing they are to help.

“It’s nice to be recognized and even better if we can get the word out there that we’re here to help for clients who are disabled or clients who are elderly who want to stay in their own home. Anybody that has a need who can’t get out to shop for themselves or can’t cook their own meals, we want to be able to help.”

Meals on Wheels was previously recognized by the City of Airdrie last month who declared May 2nd as Meals on Wheels Day.
