Traffic concerns on two of Airdrie’s busiest streets have prompted discussions about implementing red light cameras.

Yankee Valley Boulevard and Veterans Boulevard are the main routes in and out of the City, and at times the traffic on them can cause a major headache for drivers.

Councillor Tina Petrow said she frequently hears from residents who are frustrated with the issues and want something to change.

“I know it’s been an on-going issue for years,” she explained. “As the city grows I think it’s important to look into it every once in a while, we do have a lot of residents who are concerned about the safety [of intersections].”

Petrow said one of the things she keeps hearing is that people want to see red light cameras to help stop people from running lights on Yankee Valley and Veterans Boulevards.

“It’s important just to keep re-evaluating because maybe it’s not even red light cameras, maybe it’s that advanced flashing ambers might give them enough notice to slow down and stop in time. Maybe it’s a timing thing,” Petrow said.

“I would just like to see if it’s something that we’re not providing or if it’s something we could do better at.”

She has asked City staff to review intersection safety to see if more needs to be done to help manage some of the issues and concerns residents have.

“Just having the data to back that up is really great to say no they’re not warranted at this time or yes we should go ahead and get these,” said Petrow.

City Council will request information from city staff at the next Council meeting on April 1.
