On Saturday (December 9), the Airdrie Hospice Society received a generous donation of $2,500 from the Airdrie Legion.

Lise Blanchette, Board President for the Airdrie Hospice Society, said the seeds for the donation were planted in April.

"At the Home & Lifestyle show, someone from the Legion actually approached us at our booth and said that we should look at trying to apply for some funding from them."

The funds were raised by the Legion's casino fundraiser, and the Legion was impressed by the way the Hospice Society supports Airdrie seniors, including veterans.

Blanchette said the Hospice Society is always grateful for donations.

"We are always excited to receive any donation. Part of that means that the word is getting out in the community that we are there and they want to support a hospice in our community. Our end goal is, we do want to have a building."

The money will be put towards the Hospice Society's Compassionate Care Foundation. Blanchette told this story about two senior ladies in the community to demonstrate what that fund is used for.

"Both of their husbands were palliative and were in the Dulcina hospice in Calgary, and neither one of the ladies drove, so they were cab sharing to go see their spouses. That is one of the ways that we help them with the compassionate care fund."
