2018 was the Airdrie Food Bank's most fruitful year yet and they want to extend a big thank you.

It is estimated that by years' end, the Airdrie Food Bank will have brought in about three quarters of a million pounds of food donations that went directly to feed those less fortunate in our community.

"We've had so much support this year from local businesses, from individuals, from community groups, hockey teams - the girls hockey association did a turkey drive for us and they managed to raise enough funds to purchase a thousand turkeys which provided ten-thousand dinners which means no one in our community will be hungry this Christmas," says Lori McRitchie, Executive Director of the Airdrie Food Bank.

McRitchie says that the food bank would not be able to function without the generous help of local volunteers.

"We're up to 489 active volunteers, it's amazing. Those are people who give their time and share their heart with their community to make their community a better place. This year was a hard time for lots of families but it was also a time of great generosity, great community spirit, and just a time of people getting together to support those living right next door."

The Airdrie Food Bank is looking forward to expanding some of their programs in 2019 to help meet some of the gaps in service around Airdrie.

"We are looking at possibly helping out school children with weekend meals or doing more in the summer to support our kids. We continue to work with our community, to partner with other agencies just to make sure that Airdrie families and individuals are being cared for. We will continue to expand our partnerships," says McRitchie.
