The city of Airdrie is experiencing the worst Air quality in the province according to Environment Canada.

Meteorologist Brian Proctor says we are in the 10+ section of the air quality index and people with breathing problems need to be careful.

"Really at this point in time, anyone with respiratory issues such as asthma should not be spending time outside over the next two days and stay indoors as much as they possibly can."

Proctor also suggests that even those without breathing problems should be mindful of how much time they spend outside.

The index is developed by Health Canada to assess people's health and how many become hospitalized due to the air quality.

Proctor also says that Airdrie is seeing the highest readings of smoke in the province at the moment.

"The values we are seeing in Airdrie are the highest readings of pm 2.5 in the province at this point. Earlier this morning (August 15th) Airdrie's air quality station reported 268.0 micrograms per cubic meter and it becomes problematic above 80 micrograms per cubic meter."

We are expecting the smoke to linger around for the next few days.

"It will probably improve slightly in the afternoon but it will come down again tonight, it's going to be problematic for the next 24-28 hours"
